Visakhapatnam is set to see greater emphasis on pedestrian-friendly roads and safer walking infrastructure. The initiative follows Supreme Court directions aimed at improving pedestrian safety across major cities in the country. Road-owning agencies in 50 cities, including Visakhapatnam, have been directed to audit existing footpaths. The audit will examine deficiencies such as footpath width, height, surface condition and overall usability. Authorities have also been asked to identify areas where additional pedestrian crossings are required. Crowded locations such as markets, railway stations, bus stands, religious institutions and educational areas are among the priority areas for assessment. Accident-prone locations with a history of pedestrian injuries and fatalities are also expected to receive special attention. The measures are intended to make walking safer and improve accessibility for pedestrians, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Authorities are expected to follow applicable Indian Roads Congress standards while improving pedestrian infrastructure. Measures to address footpath encroachments and maintenance issues are also part of the broader road-safety approach. The initiative could improve walkability and last-mile connectivity across important parts of Visakhapatnam. The city's existing plans have also emphasised pedestrian-friendly streets, safe walkways and improved non-motorised transport infrastructure.
