Six-year-old Pranay Teja died after collapsing in his classroom at Little Garden School in Visakhapatnam on August 20. His family alleged that the child was slapped by his teacher over unfinished homework shortly before he collapsed. CCTV footage from the classroom reportedly showed the teacher handling and slapping the child before he became unresponsive. Police initially registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita concerning a suspicious or unnatural death. Four days after the incident, no arrest had been reported, according to officials quoted in the report. The post-mortem examination had been completed, but medical samples were sent for further analysis to determine the exact cause of death. The Andhra Pradesh School Education Department also constituted a three-member committee to conduct a detailed inquiry. The committee includes senior education and revenue officials from Visakhapatnam. Authorities said further action would depend on the findings of the investigation and medical reports. The incident has triggered widespread concern over corporal punishment and child safety in schools. However, the subsequent investigation has led to further legal action, with police later altering the case and invoking provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A teacher was subsequently arrested on August 25 and remanded to judicial custody.
