A proposal to introduce Israeli-style compulsory military training for citizens has triggered a debate among students, professionals and NCC volunteers in Visakhapatnam.
Supporters cited by Deccan Chronicle said military-style training could develop discipline, physical fitness, teamwork, leadership and civic responsibility. They also argued that basic training could help young people respond during natural disasters, emergencies and security situations.
Opposing views focused on the possible impact on higher education, employment and personal career choices. Some students questioned whether a model based on Israel would be practical for India's large and diverse population, while others favoured voluntary military or national-service programmes instead.
The report also notes that academics and observers believe any compulsory military-training proposal would require careful planning and extensive public consultation. Separately, a recent Deccan Chronicle report has discussed NCC-style training in areas such as first aid, disaster management and emergency response as an alternative to compulsory military service.
