Workshop in Visakhapatnam Advocates for the Elimination of Corporal Punishment in Schools
Visakhapatnam: A district-level workshop titled "Awareness of Different Stakeholders Regarding Section 17 of the RTE Act, 2009: Guidelines on Eliminating Corporal Punishment in Schools" was held at Visakha Valley School on Tuesday.
The event aimed to address the harmful effects of corporal punishment and advocate for its eradication from educational institutions.
K. Appa Rao, Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), emphasized the urgent need to end corporal punishment to ensure a positive and productive learning environment for students. He urged headmasters, principals, and education officers to strictly enforce regulations against corporal punishment and provide support and counseling to affected students. "It is essential for educators to back students in achieving their goals and help them develop resilience," Rao stated.
RJD Vijay Bhaskar highlighted the severe impact of corporal punishment on students, noting that it instills extreme fear rather than fostering a conducive learning atmosphere. He urged teachers to focus on guiding and advising students to help them reach their objectives.
District Educational Officer L. Chandrakala called for a supportive and stress-free educational environment, encouraging teachers to create conditions that facilitate effective learning without unnecessary pressure.
The workshop featured Siva Lakshmi, a representative from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), as the resource person. Ravi Gotteti, a lecturer from DIET-Bheemunipatnam, and Bhanu, a SGT from MPPS Santhapalem, also contributed to the session.
M. Sunita, Mandal Educational Officer (MEO) of Gajuwaka, served as the nodal officer, coordinating the workshop and ensuring its successful execution.
