In a bid to enhance the travel experience for railway passengers, particularly those journeying in general coaches, the Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has introduced 'Economy Meals.'

Priced at just ₹20, these meals offer a convenient dining option for travelers at select railway stations.

This initiative has been rolled out initially at prominent stations including Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam Road, all within the Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway.

Recognizing the challenges faced by passengers during peak travel seasons, especially in the summer months, the Railway aims to provide accessible dining solutions, particularly for those in general coaches who find it inconvenient to leave their compartments for meals.

Under this scheme, passengers can choose from two meal options: the Economy Meal priced at ₹20 and the Snack Meal priced at ₹50.

Currently, these meal counters are operational across more than 100 stations nationwide.

At stations within the Waltair Division, the meal counters are strategically positioned near the general second-class (GS) coaches on platforms, ensuring easy access for passengers.

Divisional Railway Manager Suarabh Prasad emphasized the importance of this initiative in meeting passengers' food requirements while prioritizing affordability and convenience.

Moreover, to further enhance passenger comfort during the scorching summer months, the Waltair Division has collaborated with NGOs and voluntary agencies to provide drinking water and buttermilk at railway stations.

This holistic approach aims to address various aspects of passenger needs, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience for all.
