Anantapur Chainsaw Attack: Accused’s Right Leg Amputated; Schoolgirl Taken Off Ventilator

Two significant medical developments have emerged following the chainsaw attack on a Class 10 student at Raptadu Zilla Parishad High School in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh.

According to The Times of India, the 21-year-old accused, Hemanth, underwent emergency surgery at Anantapur Government General Hospital. Doctors amputated his right leg above the knee after bullet injuries sustained during a police encounter severely affected blood circulation, leading to tissue damage and gangrene.

Doctors also operated on his left leg, which sustained serious injuries during the firing. He remains under medical care and police security.

Schoolgirl Shows Signs of Recovery

Meanwhile, the injured schoolgirl is showing signs of improvement at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said she had been taken off ventilator support.

The student underwent multiple surgical procedures after being transferred to Bengaluru for advanced treatment. She is reportedly stable, responding to doctors and beginning to speak a few words. Medical teams continue to monitor her condition and provide supportive treatment, including oxygen assistance, nutrition and physiotherapy.

Investigation Continues

The attack took place on October 31 at the school in Raptadu. A second student was also injured while reportedly attempting to intervene.

The accused was later located by police in the Atmakur forest area. Police said he allegedly attempted to attack an officer with a knife, prompting officers to open fire. The circumstances of the incident and subsequent police action remain subject to investigation.

The medical updates and incident details above are based on published media reports. The accused’s alleged actions remain allegations unless established through legal proceedings.
