Probe Examines Recruitment of Andhra Youths
A police investigation into the recruitment of five youths from Visakhapatnam and nearby areas into the Russian military has reportedly found that they initially agreed to travel abroad for employment.
According to The Hindu, investigators found that the youths accepted overseas job offers voluntarily before being persuaded by intermediaries to take up higher-paying work connected to the Russian military.
Recruiter Questioned
Police have reportedly questioned a recruiter from Chodavaram in Anakapalli district as part of the investigation. The probe is examining how the youths were recruited, what employment terms were communicated to them and how they eventually entered military service.
The findings reported so far do not establish that the youths knowingly agreed to frontline military deployment.
Families Continue to Seek Their Return
The case involves five youths from north Andhra, including Jetti Vamsi, a 19-year-old from Duvvada in Visakhapatnam. Their families have sought intervention from the Indian and Andhra Pradesh governments to facilitate their safe return.
Earlier video appeals from some of the youths raised concerns that they could be sent towards the Russia-Ukraine frontline. The whereabouts and safety of some of the youths remain unclear in reports.
Investigation Continues
The police probe is continuing to establish the role of intermediaries and the circumstances under which the youths accepted the jobs. The reported finding that they initially travelled voluntarily does not, by itself, resolve questions about the nature of the work they were later assigned or whether they understood the terms of their recruitment.
