Ayodhya’s Ram Temple Prepares for Its First Diwali: 28 Lakh Diyas to Illuminate Saryu River

Ayodhya is set to host its first grand Diwali celebration at the newly built Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple, with elaborate and eco-friendly preparations in place. The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, is organizing the eighth edition of Deepotsav, aiming to create a world record by lighting 28 lakh diyas (oil lamps) along the banks of the Saryu river. This unprecedented celebration will mark a historic moment for Ayodhya, blending faith, tradition, and environmental consciousness.

The government has emphasized sustainability for this year’s Deepotsav, using specially designed eco-friendly lamps to minimize soot and stains on the temple’s pristine structure. These lamps are crafted to burn longer and release fewer emissions, protecting both the temple and the environment. Special wax lamps will also be used to further reduce carbon emissions. The Ram temple complex will be adorned with floral decorations, with different sections of the temple assigned specific decoration responsibilities, ensuring meticulous attention to detail.

A Symbol of Faith and Environmental Stewardship

Overseeing the event's logistics, including lighting, decorations, and cleanliness, is Ashu Shukla, a retired IG from the Bihar cadre. The temple trust aims to make this Diwali celebration a symbol of both religious devotion and environmental stewardship. To accommodate the expected surge of visitors, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra will keep the temple open for 'Bhavan Darshan' (temple viewing) from October 29 to November 1, allowing devotees to experience its grandeur until midnight. Visitors will be able to enter through Gate No. 4B and witness the intricate decorations and lighting displays, which are set to leave a lasting impression.

Unprecedented Volunteer Effort and Record-Breaking Display

In preparation for the event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Pratibha Goyal of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University has mobilized a massive team of volunteers. Over 30,000 volunteers, supported by more than 2,000 supervisors and coordinators, are decorating 55 ghats (riverfront steps) along the Saryu river with 28 lakh diyas. One of the main highlights of the celebration will be the creation of a spectacular Swastik symbol using 80,000 diyas at ghat number 10 of Ram Ki Paidi, with over 150 volunteers dedicated to this grand display.

The diyas are being meticulously arranged in 16x16 grids, each containing 256 lamps, as part of the detailed decoration plan. Volunteers from various colleges and NGOs are contributing to this effort, chanting "Jai Shri Ram" as they work. To support them, arrangements for clean drinking water and food have been made at the Bhajan Sandhya (devotional music) venue. The diyas, filled with 30 ml of mustard oil each, will be counted on October 29, following their placement by October 28.

A Historic Moment for Ayodhya

As preparations near completion, Ayodhya is set to witness a world record when 28 lakh diyas will be lit on Chhoti Diwali, October 30. The event will be a defining moment for the newly built Ram temple, which saw its idol of Ram Lalla consecrated earlier this year on January 22 in a landmark ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Deepotsav celebration, with its blend of religious devotion, sustainability, and grandeur, promises to make Ayodhya’s Diwali a global spectacle and a lasting symbol of faith and environmental responsibility.
