Comfortable Water Supply Situation in Visakhapatnam Despite Rising Temperatures, Say GVMC Officials

GVMC officials had assured the public that the water supply situation in Visakhapatnam remained comfortable, despite the recent rise in temperatures and the onset of summer.

They had stated that sufficient water was available in all the reservoirs catering to the city's needs and that they were preparing a summer action plan to ensure continued supply.

Over the past few days, the day temperatures had risen significantly in the city, signaling the arrival of summer.

Given the water crisis faced by many cities in South India at the beginning of March, concerns had been raised about potential water scarcity in Visakhapatnam.

However, GVMC officials had ruled out such a possibility.

According to statistics obtained from the GVMC, the water level of Yeleru reservoir, which supplied nearly half of the city's total 80 MGD water requirement, stood at 73.61 meters on Tuesday.

This level was slightly lower compared to the same period last year.

Despite this, GVMC officials had assured the public that there was no cause for concern.

A senior GVMC official had stated that the corporation drew around 7 tmc ft of water from the Yeleru reservoir annually, with only a fraction of this amount required in the coming months.

Therefore, they had anticipated no problems with water supply.

Similarly, the water levels in Thatipudi reservoir, Meghadrigedda reservoir, Gambheeram Gedda, and Raiwada reservoir had also been reported as sufficient to meet the city's requirements.

Over the past four to five years, the municipal corporation had not faced any major water crisis during the summer months, largely due to abundant rainfall.

Officials remained optimistic that this trend would continue.

In anticipation of increased water usage during the summer, the GVMC had been preparing a summer action plan.

This plan included deploying water tankers to vulnerable areas, arranging additional bores, repairing existing ones, and implementing measures to prevent spills and leakages.

The corporation was in the process of finalizing this plan, which was expected to be released soon.
