Cricket Returns to the Olympic Stage in 2028 LA Games
In a groundbreaking move, cricket is set to make its long-awaited return to the Summer Olympics in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, marking a comeback after an absence of 128 years.
This exciting development, as reported by The Guardian from the United Kingdom, signifies a significant milestone for the sport and the Olympic movement.
Cricket will be one of the five newly included sports, joining the ranks of flag football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and squash in the roster for the 2028 Olympic Games.
The Los Angeles Organizing Committee has reportedly confirmed the list of disciplines to be added to the Olympic Games, and an official announcement of these additions is expected after discussions with the Olympic program commission during the International Olympic Committee's session in Mumbai.
The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is especially noteworthy as the sport has only been featured once before, way back in 1900 when Great Britain, represented by Devon and Somerset Wanderers, clashed with France in a 12-a-side match. The historic encounter saw Great Britain emerge victorious with a convincing 185-run win.
The International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body of the sport, expressed its joy and optimism regarding the recommendation. Greg Barclay, Chairman of the ICC, said, "We are delighted that LA28 has recommended cricket for inclusion in the Olympics.
While this is not the final decision, it is a very significant landmark toward seeing cricket at the Olympics for the first time in more than a century. We look forward to the final decision being taken at the IOC Session, in India, during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup next week."
As cricket prepares to grace the Olympic stage once again, the 2028 Games will see breakdancing making its debut in Paris next year. However, after its initial appearance, breakdancing will not be part of the 2028 Olympic program.
Similarly, other sports like motorsports, kickboxing, and karate did not make the cut for the upcoming Games.
The addition of cricket and other sports raises the question of whether other disciplines will need to reduce their athlete numbers to adhere to the International Olympic Committee's limit of 10,500 athletes at a Summer Olympics, as the inclusion of five team sports will expand the participant count.
Among the newly included sports, flag football stands out as a less-violent cousin of America's most popular sport. The NFL has been promoting flag football in Europe, Mexico, and Japan for years, making it a global phenomenon.
This 5-on-5 game, played on a 50-yard field, emphasizes skill and agility, with players "tackled" by pulling a flag off their belts. Notably, there are no traditional offensive and defensive linemen in flag football.
In the 2028 Games, flag football will showcase its unique style and competitiveness, bringing a fresh dynamic to the Olympic stage.
