Empowering Rural Women with the Pfizer Autonomous Team Program in Visakhapatnam



In a significant initiative, Pfizer Healthcare India Private Limited, in collaboration with GITAM, has introduced the 'Pfizer Autonomous Team' (PAT) program in Visakhapatnam.

This program is aimed at providing specialized training to rural women in Andhra Pradesh, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for a promising career in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

The PAT program, tailored exclusively for women, offers a Bachelor of Chemistry degree with a strong emphasis on Microbiology. What sets this program apart is its practical approach, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience across various plant functions, effectively applying their academic learning.

The overarching goal of PAT is to empower women and prepare them for future leadership roles in the pharma and healthcare industries.


During the program's inauguration at the GITAM campus, Muralidhar Sharma, Pfizer's global supply site lead and vice-president, expressed the program's commitment to increasing female representation in the pharmaceutical sector.

He also highlighted the program's focus on attracting local talent, nurturing them to become future industry leaders. Dean of the School of Science, KS Krishna, reiterated the institution's dedication to collaborating with industries to bolster its knowledge base.

He emphasized that Pfizer has taken steps to engage with the local community, providing practical education and integrating women into their workforce.

Ravi Kiran Teegala, Director of Pfizer Global Supply India (People Experience), shared that the PAT program was initially launched in 2022 with 47 students. In a testament to its success and growing demand, the program expanded to accommodate an additional 120 students in 2023.

Another 103 students have recently joined this industry-academia initiative, underlining its importance and impact. Pfizer remains committed to updating the program's curriculum to align with industry standards, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness.

Notable figures such as School of Science Principal Vedavathi and Chemistry Department Head B Sreenivasa Rao were present at the event, emphasizing the collaborative effort to empower women and uplift communities in Visakhapatnam.
