Hindustan Shipyard Limited's Vision for an E-Vessel Ecosystem in India
In a remarkable effort to bolster the e-vessel ecosystem and propel the marine sector toward a sustainable and greener future, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is taking substantial strides.
Their objective is to match international standards by reducing vessel construction time to an impressive 8-12 months. HSL is adopting a modular concept to achieve this goal, focusing on developing a family of e-tugs with bollard pull capacities ranging from 40T to 80T and beyond.
These e-tugs will be equipped with a wide range of options, including compatibility for using green alternative fuels, catering to diverse customer operational requirements.
HSL is not embarking on this journey alone. They are collaborating with various R&D, industry, and academic institutions to progressively develop critical systems for e-vessels.
This encompasses systems like energy management, energy storage with battery management, high-power electronics, high-efficiency axial flux motors, and propulsion control. HSL plays a pivotal role as an integrator, bringing together the collective efforts of these entities.
Furthermore, HSL has adopted a customer-centric approach, reaching out to a diverse customer base that includes ports, tug operators, and shipping companies.
Their commitment to implementing green technologies in the maritime sector is evident in their dedication to addressing the unique needs of each client.
In alignment with the national vision of making India a 'Global Hub for Green Ships' by 2030, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) is pushing for the conversion of at least 50 percent of tugs into green tugs by 2030 through the 'Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP).'
HSL's ambitions also extend to fostering a thriving ancillary ecosystem centered around Visakhapatnam. They plan to involve promising industries in Visakhapatnam and coastal districts in their program, exposing them to new technologies and incorporating them into a flourishing ancillary system.
Hindustan Shipyard Limited, a defense public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence (Defence Production), is taking pioneering steps to realize Prime Minister Modi's vision of a sustainable maritime sector and a vibrant blue economy.
Their goal is to develop an autonomous capability to design and build e-tugs by 2026, ultimately promoting a thriving e-vessel ecosystem in India.
