Cyclone Damage Changes Election Campaign Priorities
The impact of Cyclone Arnab has prompted several corporator candidates contesting the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) elections to focus on relief and restoration work in affected neighbourhoods.
According to The Hindu, candidates from both ruling alliance and opposition parties visited localities affected by heavy rain and strong winds. Their activities included assisting residents, coordinating with civic authorities and helping address disruptions caused by fallen trees, blocked drains and damaged electricity infrastructure.
The shift came as Visakhapatnam began recovery efforts following the cyclone, with several neighbourhoods facing challenges involving roads, power supply and access to essential services.
Candidates Assist Residents in Affected Wards
From Tuesday evening, candidates and their teams were seen working alongside Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) personnel and other workers in different wards.
The reported activities included clearing fallen trees and debris, addressing waterlogging, helping clear blocked drains and contacting the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) about electricity restoration.
In Akkayyapalem, NDA mayoral candidate Mukka Sravani participated in relief efforts and alerted officials to damage caused by fallen electric poles and uprooted trees.
In Bheemunipatnam, YSRCP constituency coordinator Botcha Anusha visited low-lying areas and distributed relief materials to affected residents alongside corporator candidates.
Other candidates also assisted with debris clearance and efforts to restore drinking water and electricity in affected localities.
Relief Activities Across Multiple Localities
In China Waltair, candidates and their teams participated in clearing fallen trees and debris that obstructed roads. In One Town, some candidates helped facilitate the removal of fallen electric poles, supported drinking water restoration efforts and visited rehabilitation centres to check on evacuated residents.
Former Jana Sena Party GVMC floor leader B. Vasantha Lakshmi and her team also coordinated relief efforts in several colonies, according to the report.
These activities took place as residents dealt with transport disruptions, power outages and damage to neighbourhood infrastructure.
Election Campaigning Continues in Some Areas
Despite the adverse weather, campaigning continued in several wards. Candidates from different parties conducted door-to-door outreach, held meetings and used campaign vehicles in some neighbourhoods.
The contrast between electioneering and relief activities highlighted the challenges facing candidates during the final phase of the campaign, as residents dealt with the immediate consequences of the cyclone.
Restoration Remains a Priority for Residents
For residents affected by Cyclone Arnab, the immediate priorities include clearing roads, restoring electricity and drinking water, removing hazardous debris and ensuring that vulnerable households receive assistance.
GVMC personnel, electricity officials, emergency workers and local volunteers continue to play important roles in the recovery effort.
As the GVMC elections approach, the response to cyclone damage has brought attention to the role of ward-level representatives in addressing urgent civic problems and coordinating with public authorities.
