Cyclone Arnab Weakens After Landfall
Cyclone Arnab, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts on Wednesday morning, has weakened into a deep depression as it moved inland, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system completed its landfall during the early hours of October 28, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall and disruptions across parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh. After crossing the coast, the storm gradually lost intensity as it moved northwestwards and then nearly northwards.
Deep Depression Located Near 17.8°N and 81.8°E
According to the IMD bulletin issued late on October 28, the deep depression was centred near 17.8°N latitude and 81.8°E longitude.
The system was located approximately 60 km south of Malkangiri in Odisha, 90 km west-southwest of Paderu in Andhra Pradesh, 140 km south of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh and 190 km east-northeast of Khammam in Telangana.
The weather system continued moving nearly northwards at approximately 15 kmph during the preceding six hours.
Further Weakening Expected
The IMD forecast that the deep depression would weaken into a depression by the morning of October 29 and subsequently develop into a well-marked low-pressure area by the evening.
Although the system has weakened considerably since landfall, its remnants may continue to bring rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Residents should continue following official weather bulletins and local administration advisories, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding, waterlogging and rain-related disruptions.
Cyclone Leaves a Trail of Disruption
Cyclone Arnab brought destructive winds and heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh during landfall. Several locations reported fallen trees, damaged electricity infrastructure, disrupted transport and power outages.
Emergency response teams and local authorities have been working to clear debris, restore essential services and assess damage in affected areas.
The weakening of the system marks a reduction in its intensity, but authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as the remnants move inland.
