Cyclone Asani moving towards Vizag coast, may take U-turn to Bangladesh



Cyclone Asani that had formed in the Bay of Bengal may spare north Andhra Pradesh as the moving cyclone may take a U-Turn and head towards Bangladesh before the landfall. However, Vizag and adjoining areas in north Andhra Pradesh will witness light to moderate rainfall in the next few days. 

“Cyclone Asani in the Bay of Bengal and is heading straight towards Vizag coast on May 10. It will cause light and moderate rainfall in the entire North Andhra Pradesh coast on May 10 and 11and then move towards Bangladesh by taking a 'U-Turn'. The official forecast also shows Cyclone Asani will definitely move close to Vizag city. 

Speaking to Hello Vizag, noted weather blogger B Sai Praneeth, popularly known as ‘Andhra Pradesh Weatherman’ requested all Vizagites and North AP people to keep mobile phones charged and do all the important work. The impact of this Cyclone will be less, but we need to be prepared.


The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclonic storm Asani over Southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards on Sunday with a speed of 13 kmph and lay centered over the same region near latitude 11.6°N and longitude 88.7°E, about 530 km west-northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 440 km west of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 900 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 960 km south-southeast of Puri (Odisha). 


“It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal during next six hours. It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till May 10 evening and reach West central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-north eastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast,” said IMD. 


Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the Andaman Sea on Sunday. They were also advised not to venture into central parts of the Bay of Bengal on Monday and Tuesday and over Northwest Bay of Bengal from May 10 to 12.
