Delhi Lok Sabha Election 2024 LIVE Updates: Voters Queue Up as Jaishankar, Rahul, and Sonia Cast Votes

Delhi: Voters lined up early at polling booths across Delhi as the city began voting for its seven parliamentary constituencies in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The day started with tight security arrangements and a "yellow alert" from the weather department, predicting temperatures to soar up to 44 degrees Celsius. The Delhi election department has made special provisions to help voters cope with the heat.

Despite the heat, people were seen queuing outside polling stations even before voting commenced at 7 a.m. Over 1.52 crore voters, including 82 lakh males, 69 lakh females, and 1,228 individuals from the third gender, are eligible to vote at more than 13,000 polling booths. Among these voters, there are over 2.52 lakh first-time voters.

Key Candidates and Parties
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded candidates in several constituencies: Kuldeep Kumar (East Delhi), Mahabal Mishra (West Delhi), Somnath Bharti (New Delhi), and Sahi Ram Pahalwan (South Delhi). The Congress has nominated J.P. Agarwal (Chandni Chowk), Kanhaiya Kumar (North East Delhi), and Udit Raj (North West Delhi).

The BJP is looking to retain its dominance with candidates like Manoj Tiwari (North East Delhi), Ramvir Singh Bidhuri (South Delhi), Bansuri Swaraj (New Delhi), Harsh Deep Malhotra (East Delhi), Yogendra Chandolia (North West Delhi), Praveen Khandelwal (Chandni Chowk), and Kamaljeet Sehrawat (West Delhi).

In the past two general elections, the BJP won all seven seats in Delhi and is aiming for a third consecutive clean sweep. This election is notable as it marks the first time AAP and Congress are fielding joint candidates under a four-three seat-sharing formula to challenge the BJP.

Key Updates and Statements
Rahul Gandhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, after casting his vote, emphasized that people have rejected "lies, hatred, and propaganda" in the first five phases of the elections. He urged Delhiites to vote in large numbers, stressing the importance of voting for their rights and the future of their families.

Atishi's Allegations: AAP leader Atishi alleged that Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena held a meeting with the Delhi Police to intentionally slow down the voting process in areas that are strongholds of the INDIA bloc.

Weather and Voter Turnout
The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 30.6 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. Despite the heat, no heat wave is predicted for the day, and voters are encouraged to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions while heading to the polls.
