Election Results 2024: Samajwadi Party Makes Significant Comeback in Uttar Pradesh

In a stunning turnaround, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has made a significant comeback in Uttar Pradesh, as the INDIA bloc takes a lead over the NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The latest data from the Election Commission shows the SP and Congress of the INDIA bloc leading in 34 and 7 seats respectively, while the BJP-led NDA is ahead in 35 seats.

This marks a remarkable shift from the 2019 elections, where the BJP secured 62 seats on its own in Uttar Pradesh. The SP, under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, has reversed its fortunes from the last election, where it managed only five seats in alliance with the BSP.

Prominent leaders showing strong leads include Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav in Kannauj and Mainpuri. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Kishori Lal Sharma are leading in Rae Bareli and Amethi, respectively.

The opposition's resurgence is largely attributed to Akhilesh Yadav's strategic campaigning, which included strong alliances with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s party. This election marks the first without SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Akhilesh has stepped up, leading the SP to its best performance since 2004.

The BJP faced challenges during the campaign, particularly when Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi's partnership was mocked as the "Do ladko ki jodi" (two boys' pair) by Narendra Modi. Yadav’s rebuttal against accusations of nepotism forced the BJP to adjust its narrative, even leading some BJP members to add “Modi ka Parivaar” (Modi's family) to their social media profiles.

The SP allocated 18 seats to Congress, one to TMC, and fielded candidates for the remaining constituencies in the state. The results reflect a significant shift in voter sentiment and suggest a more competitive political landscape in Uttar Pradesh moving forward.
