Rushikonda Beach Declared a ‘No Plastic Zone’ by Visakhapatnam District Collector

Visakhapatnam, India, January 20, 2025

Rushikonda Beach, one of Visakhapatnam's most popular tourist destinations, has been officially declared a 'No Plastic Zone' by the District Collector in a decisive move to protect the region's natural beauty and marine ecosystem.

Protecting the Environment
The announcement comes as part of a broader campaign to promote environmental sustainability and curb pollution along the coastline. The initiative seeks to eliminate single-use plastics from the beach, reduce littering, and raise awareness about the adverse effects of plastic waste on marine life.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative, District Collector Dr. A. Mallikarjuna emphasized the urgent need for action:
"Rushikonda Beach is not just a tourist spot but a vital part of Visakhapatnam's identity. By declaring it a No Plastic Zone, we aim to preserve its pristine beauty and ensure a cleaner environment for future generations."

Measures to Enforce the Ban
To ensure compliance, the district administration has deployed special monitoring teams to patrol the beach and surrounding areas. Key measures include:
Ban on Plastic Items: Vendors and tourists are prohibited from using or carrying plastic items, including bags, bottles, and straws, on the beach.
Eco-friendly Alternatives: The administration is encouraging the use of biodegradable and reusable materials such as cloth bags, steel bottles, and paper-based products.
Awareness Drives: Educational campaigns are being conducted to inform visitors and vendors about the harmful impact of plastics on the environment and wildlife.
Waste Management Units:* Additional garbage bins and waste segregation units have been installed to ensure proper disposal and recycling of waste.

Community Participation and Support
Local communities and environmental organizations have welcomed the initiative, pledging their support to maintain the beach’s cleanliness. Volunteers and NGOs are actively involved in organizing beach clean-up drives and spreading awareness among tourists.

Mr. Ravi Kumar, a member of an environmental NGO, shared his thoughts:
"This is a much-needed step to protect Rushikonda’s natural beauty. Plastic waste has been a major issue, and this ban will go a long way in reducing pollution."

Towards a Sustainable Future
Rushikonda Beach attracts thousands of visitors annually, making it crucial to balance tourism with environmental conservation. The declaration of the beach as a No Plastic Zone is part of Visakhapatnam's broader efforts to promote eco-friendly tourism and achieve sustainable development goals.

Authorities are optimistic that with strict enforcement and community involvement, the initiative will set an example for other beaches across Andhra Pradesh and India. As Visakhapatnam takes this step toward environmental stewardship, Rushikonda Beach is poised to become a model of sustainable coastal management.
