Future-Proofing Vizag: Comprehensive Storm Water Drainage Plan for 2055

In a forward-looking initiative, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is gearing up to formulate an extensive storm water drainage system plan for Vizag. This visionary plan is being crafted with a long-term perspective, aiming for the year 2055 and beyond, spanning over 30 years.

The primary objective of this ambitious undertaking, as articulated by GVMC officials, is to establish a detailed blueprint that will serve as the cornerstone for all forthcoming storm water drainage projects and interventions across the city.

The plan's scope encompasses the division of the city into various zones and sub-zones, driven by specific requirements, in order to create a hierarchical framework for the drainage system. This hierarchical approach will strategically determine the optimal locations for cost-effective interventions.

Vizag, a coastal city nestled between hillocks on three sides and the sea on the other, often experiences heavy rains during the monsoon season.

The unique topographical conditions of the city result in rainwater runoff from hills and catchment areas flowing at high speeds, coursing through unregulated major drains before ultimately emptying into the sea. Consequently, during heavy rains, nearby residential areas are prone to flooding, exacerbating the need for a robust storm water drainage system.

Over time, the storm water drains in the city's core have gradually narrowed due to various human activities, while newly merged areas lack adequate drainage infrastructure.

Some parts of Vizag even lack an underground drainage system, causing wastewater to mix with storm water drains. Encroachments and obstructions along the drains have further compounded the problem.

The comprehensive drainage plan is poised to be a game-changer, addressing these challenges by providing a holistic view of the existing storm drain network, sullage issues, inundation severity, and environmental concerns.

It will also identify the locations of primary drains and outfalls, pinpoint pollution sources, and highlight any gaps in the current system. Moreover, the plan will shed light on physical constraints and encroachments, offering a comprehensive understanding of the existing scenario and presenting a roadmap for effective interventions.

In essence, this forward-looking initiative by GVMC aims to safeguard Vizag against the consequences of rapid urbanization and unplanned growth, ensuring the city's resilience in the face of heavy rainfall and storm events.
