Government Mulls ₹1,000 Crore Plan to Resolve Vizag’s Drinking Water Woes

The Andhra Pradesh government is considering a major ₹1,000-crore investment to address drinking water challenges in Visakhapatnam. The proposed plan comes amid growing concerns over the city’s water requirements as its population and urban footprint continue to expand. The initiative is expected to focus on strengthening the existing water supply infrastructure. Authorities are looking at long-term measures rather than relying only on short-term supply arrangements. The proposed investment could support improvements in water treatment, storage and distribution systems. It may also help strengthen the network required to provide a more reliable supply to households across the city. Visakhapatnam has been witnessing rapid urban and economic development, increasing pressure on civic infrastructure. The government is also pursuing broader water and sewerage projects through reform-linked urban infrastructure programmes. A 24×7 Smart Water Supply Project for Vizag has already received approval under the Urban Challenge Fund, with plans including a new treatment plant, network expansion and smart metering. These projects are intended to improve service efficiency and reduce losses in the distribution system. The proposed ₹1,000-crore plan could complement these ongoing infrastructure efforts. Further details on funding, project components and implementation are expected as the government finalises the proposal. The move could provide a significant boost to drinking water security for residents across Visakhapatnam.
