GVMC Commissioner Calls for Enhanced Sanitation in Hilly Residential Areas

Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar has emphasized the need for improved sanitation in residential hill areas alongside the plain regions.

On Monday, during his field inspection, Commissioner Sampath Kumar reviewed sanitation efforts in YSR Nagar, FCI Godowns, and Kapparada in wards 45, 47, and 53. He directed officials to accelerate sanitation projects and ensure the swift operation of Anna Canteens.

He also mandated the installation of effective drainage systems in these canteens to prevent sewage overflow.

In Kapparada's hilly residential area, the commissioner inspected existing drains, roads, and sanitation facilities.

He instructed officials to enhance sanitation, monitor drainage flow daily to prevent waste dumping, and educate shopkeepers and street vendors on proper waste disposal practices.

Superintending Engineer Venugopal Rao was tasked with installing streetlights where needed and repairing damaged drains.

Addressing the issue of inadequate underground drainage, the commissioner urged for increased public awareness on proper sewage disposal.

Given the high population density in these hilly areas, Sampath Kumar instructed Zonal Commissioner RGV Krishna to reassign aged sanitation workers and deploy more efficient staff to ensure regular and effective sanitation.

The visit was attended by Executive Engineer Matsya Raju, Assistant Executive Engineer Prasanna, Assistant Medical Officer Sunil Kumar, ACP Venkateswara Rao, and Horticulture Officer Archana, among others.
