In a proactive move to curb the spread of diarrhoea, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), under the leadership of Commissioner CM Saikanth Varma, has inaugurated a dedicated control room at its headquarters.

The newly established control room will operate round the clock, focusing on monitoring and swiftly addressing issues related to water contamination, sewage management, and the prevention of diseases such as malaria, diarrhoea, and dengue.

Commissioner Varma chaired a comprehensive review meeting on Tuesday, outlining the strategies for the Diarrhoea Prevention Campaign 2024, scheduled to span from July 1 to August 31.

A key component of this campaign involves ward secretaries and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) visiting households to educate families with children under five about effective diarrhoea prevention measures.

The campaign will emphasize crucial aspects such as personal hygiene practices, efficient waste disposal, cleanliness of public toilets, rigorous water quality testing, provision of safe drinking water, desilting of drains and canals, and extensive awareness drives on diarrhoea and seasonal ailments.

Public cooperation is strongly urged, with recommendations to consume boiled or purified water and maintain strict hygiene standards to mitigate the risk of diarrhoeal diseases. Daily updates on diarrhoea, malaria, and dengue cases will be meticulously compiled and submitted to the Chief Medical Officer.

Furthermore, collaborative efforts with self-help groups will be intensified through targeted meetings aimed at disseminating knowledge on preventive measures. The cityscape will be adorned with informative hoardings and banners, reinforcing the importance of diarrhoea prevention across Visakhapatnam. Rigorous inspections will also ensure that public toilets are equipped with adequate facilities.

This proactive initiative by the GVMC underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health through robust preventive measures and community engagement.
