In a proactive step toward addressing waste management challenges, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has announced plans to establish a poultry waste rendering plant in the city. This initiative aims to curb the growing problem of illegal chicken waste dumping that has been affecting sanitation and public health in several areas of Visakhapatnam.
Currently, waste generated by poultry shops and meat vendors is often disposed of improperly, leading to foul odors, blocked drains, and a rise in vector-borne diseases. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the environmental and health hazards caused by this unregulated dumping.
To resolve the issue sustainably, GVMC will set up a dedicated rendering plant that will process poultry waste into useful by-products such as biofuel, tallow, and protein meal. This plant is expected to not only ensure safe disposal but also promote circular waste economy practices.
GVMC Commissioner C.M. Saikanth Varma emphasized that the project aligns with the city’s mission to become cleaner, greener, and more sustainable. “The rendering plant will streamline waste handling and eliminate open dumping, especially in market zones,” he said.
The location, funding model, and public-private partnership details are expected to be finalized soon. Once operational, the plant will mark a significant advancement in Visakhapatnam’s solid waste management strategy, providing both environmental and economic benefits.
