Heavy Rainfall Expected in Andhra Pradesh as Low-Pressure System Forms
Visakhapatnam: A low-pressure system is set to develop over the west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to several parts of Andhra Pradesh.
This weather event follows the merging of two surface circulations in the region.
According to the weather office, “Embedded upper air cyclonic circulations, one over the west-central Bay of Bengal and another near southern coastal Myanmar, have merged, creating a cyclonic circulation that extends up to 5.8 km above sea level and is tilting southwestward. As a result, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal and nearby regions by Monday night.”
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema. On the first day, heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely in isolated areas, with surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h.
Similar conditions are expected on the second day, while from days three to five, isolated areas in NCAP, Yanam, SCAP, and Rayalaseema may continue to experience thunderstorms with lightning.
The IMD also announced that the southwest monsoon has officially withdrawn from parts of West Rajasthan and Kachchh as of September 23, 2024, later than the usual withdrawal date of September 17. This withdrawal is marked by the establishment of an anti-cyclonic circulation over West Rajasthan and a five-day period of no rainfall in the region.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather reports and take necessary precautions as the system develops.
