Hyderabad as Joint Capital Until Visakhapatnam Becomes Executive Capital: YSRCP Coordinator
In a statement that has sparked debate, YSRCP coordinator for North Andhra districts and Rajya Sabha candidate, Y. V. Subba Reddy, suggested that Hyderabad should serve as the joint capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana until Visakhapatnam is established as the Executive capital.
Citing the Andhra Pradesh Bifurcation Act of 2014, Subba Reddy highlighted the initial agreement for Hyderabad to function as the joint capital for a decade until Andhra Pradesh established its own capital.
However, he criticized the previous administration for failing to establish a permanent capital and operating from a temporary base in Amaravati.
Subba Reddy noted that despite efforts to designate Visakhapatnam as the Executive capital, legal obstacles emerged.
Expressing concerns over the state's financial constraints, Subba Reddy proposed the interim use of Hyderabad as the capital city until Visakhapatnam's development as the Executive capital.
He indicated that discussions on this proposal would take place post the upcoming General and Assembly elections, with a formal proposal to follow.
This suggestion follows Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy's 2020 proposal for three capitals, envisioning Amaravati as the Legislative capital, Visakhapatnam as the Executive capital, and Kurnool as the Judicial capital.
However, the laws pertaining to this proposal were repealed by the Andhra Pradesh government in 2021, leading to legal disputes, particularly from farmers in Amaravati who had contributed land under the land pooling scheme for the capital's construction.
