The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide thunderstorm alert for Andhra Pradesh, with specific warnings for coastal regions including Visakhapatnam, from June 30 to July 3. The advisory highlights the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall, thunder, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h in several districts.
According to IMD officials, this weather activity is due to the strengthening of monsoon currents over the Bay of Bengal, which are expected to interact with local climatic conditions. The department has urged citizens, especially fishermen and residents in low-lying areas, to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
Local authorities have been placed on alert, with disaster management teams and emergency helplines activated across vulnerable zones in Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram districts.
“People are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and secure loose objects like tin sheets and hoardings,” said an IMD spokesperson.
Schools in some regions may shift to online classes or operate on reduced schedules depending on rainfall intensity. Transport services have also been advised to prepare for potential delays or route diversions.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather pattern and will provide regular updates to ensure public safety.
