The third phase of India's General Elections 2024 saw active participation across several states and Union Territories, with a voter turnout of 60.19% recorded by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
This phase encompassed 93 constituencies spread over 11 regions, and was marked by sporadic incidents of violence in West Bengal.
Assam reported the highest voter turnout at 74.86%, closely followed by West Bengal at 73.93%. In contrast, Maharashtra recorded the lowest turnout at 53.63%, with Bihar slightly ahead at 56.01%. Additionally, Gujarat saw a voter turnout of 55.22% across its 25 Lok Sabha seats during this phase.
The electoral process witnessed clashes in West Bengal, where workers from TMC, BJP, and Congress-CPI(M) engaged in altercations within various parts of Murshidabad and Jangipur constituencies.
Amidst the electoral buzz, significant political figures campaigned vigorously. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted plans to abolish the Agniveer scheme if the INDIA bloc ascends to power, attributing its initiation to PM Narendra Modi rather than the Army.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh, expressed a desire for 400 Lok Sabha seats to prevent Congress from exploiting OBC quotas for vote bank gains, citing the removal of Article 370 as a pivotal achievement.
Over 1,300 candidates contested during this phase, including approximately 120 women, with prominent figures like Amit Shah, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Digvijya Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mansukh Mandaviya, Parshottam Rupala, Pralhad Joshi, and S.P. Singh Baghel vying for electoral success.
The Election Commission ordered repolling at a booth in Rajasthan's Barmer seat due to breaches in vote confidentiality, which is set to take place on May 8.
This decision followed the suspension of four polling team members over allegations of misconduct during the April 26 voting phase.
As the electoral saga continues, these developments underscore the significance and complexities of India's democratic exercise, with each phase revealing unique insights and challenges for the nation's political landscape.
