India is Going to Witness a New Era of Women's Cricket
India winning the 2011 ICC World Cup is something that we are going to cherish for a lifetime. Watching those matches live and chanting the slogans lives in our memories afresh, but if we talk about women's cricket in 2011, most of us are unaware that women's cricket teams exist. Thanks to the 2017 ICC Women's World Cup and our Indian team's performance throughout the tournament, women's cricket came into the limelight. Even though India lost the final against England, it won hearts and laid a foundation for young girls who wanted to play cricket. Many young girls started enrolling in cricket after the World Cup. Live broadcasts for women's cricket have started to increase.
BCCI started the Women's T20 Challenge in 2018, similar to the IPL, where Indian and foreign players were part of different teams. These matches were broadcast live on television; domestic cricket matches increased, and the Indian team performed well in international matches. The Indian women's cricket team reached the ICC T20 Women's World Cup finals in 2020 after going undefeated in the group stage, and they went on to play many other series.
On October 27, 2022, the BCCI came up with a historic decision and announced equal pay for men and women cricketers so as to set a platform for growing and developing cricket. The ICC has begun the inaugural Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup, which is currently being held in South Africa to take women's cricket forward.
Now, BCCI is all set to launch the inaugural edition of the women's IPL. On Monday, Viacom18 won the media rights to the Women's IPL for a period of five years (2023–2027). Viacom18's bid stood at Rs 951 crore, meaning that the per-match value will be Rs 7.09 crore for the next five years. This is massive for the development of women's cricket and is going to change the course of Indian women's cricket, and improve domestic cricket as well, leading to a new era.
