Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary: The natures abode
The Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a 70.70 sq km area with dry, evergreen forest mixed with scrub and meadows. It was named after the local hillock Kambalakonda. The terrain is hilly with steep slopes. It has been under the control of the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department since 10 March 1970. Earlier, the land was under the control of the Maharajah of Vizianagaram.
Recently, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department has taken the step to monitor wildlife at the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary in Visakhapatnam. Cameras have been installed at various animal hotspots across Kambalakonda. Over the last few decades, India has witnessed a substantial decline in the population of many wild animals, and birds, making them endangered. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has been taking up various projects to ensure the safety and security of these species.
On your visit to Kambalakonda, hire a local guide and explore this dry, evergreen forest. This is one of the few eco-centres in Andhra Pradesh. The four mountainous terrains offer some fantastic trekking trails and picturesque views of the surrounding landscapes. Leopards, jackals, Indian pangolin, cobras, Russell's viper, Indian muntjac and chitals can be spotted. Also, keep a lookout for flocks of partridges, Asian paradise-flycatcher, quails, treepies, blue-tailed bee-eater, spot-billed duck and hoopoes.
A day at the reserve forest is indeed an adventure of rare sorts. Spending time in the company of peacocks, deer, emus, lovebirds, and other endangered species is a refreshing treat for eco-tourists. The reservoir formed during the earthen bund's construction across a stream has now become a haven for birdwatchers. Trekking, boating, hitch-hiking, horse-riding, and crossing bridges, it has all that gives one a forest-like experience.
