KGH Superintendent Takes Leave Amidst Sexual Harassment Allegations
Visakhapatnam: Dr. P Ashok Kumar, the superintendent of King George Hospital (KGH), has taken a leave of absence following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against him.
The FIR stems from allegations of sexual harassment filed by a nursing superintendent at the hospital.
The complainant, who belongs to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community, accused Dr. Ashok Kumar of multiple instances of sexual assault and other forms of harassment. This complaint was lodged after the complainant was ‘surrendered’ to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) office following an internal inquiry by DME officials.
In response to the allegations, Dr. Ashok Kumar’s wife, Dr. Aruna Devi, has been transferred from KGH to the emergency department of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) as a medical officer on a work order basis.
During Dr. Ashok Kumar’s absence, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Vani will assume additional responsibilities as the acting superintendent of KGH.
The local police are currently coordinating with revenue officials to confirm the caste status of the complainant. They have also requested KGH authorities to provide the necessary equipment and facilities to conduct medical tests on the victim.
The FIR against Dr. Ashok Kumar has been filed under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
