Visakhapatnam: The Vizag traffic police have intensified their efforts to curb illegal parking, resulting in the wheel-locking of at least 200 to 250 vehicles daily. This initiative, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and promoting disciplined parking, began on May 25.

In the initial two days, approximately 500 vehicles parked illegally across various city areas were wheel-locked. Since then, police teams have consistently wheel-locked around 200-250 vehicles each day. The most frequent violations have been observed in busy areas such as Asilmetta, Siripuram, Ram Nagar, Jagadamba Junction, and Dwaraka Nagar.

"If motorists find their vehicles wheel-locked, they can call the number on a sticker pasted on the lock. A traffic police constable will then remove the lock after generating an e-challan. Fines do not need to be paid on the spot.

This measure is to ensure motorists park only in designated areas or business cellars," stated Additional DCP (Traffic) G. Srinivasa Rao.

In emergencies, such as near hospitals or in areas without available parking, the police exercise leniency. However, vehicles obstructing traffic despite available parking spaces will be wheel-locked. The city police have acquired around 200 wheel-lock sets to facilitate this drive.

Awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage establishments to provide adequate parking spaces. Commissioner of Police A. Ravi Shankar emphasized that the drive's goal is to instill parking discipline among motorists. He assured that this rigorous enforcement would continue for a month, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing inconvenience caused by illegal parking.

This proactive approach by the Vizag police highlights their commitment to maintaining order and reducing traffic-related issues in the city.
