Mango Majesty: Delightful Arrival in Vizag Markets

The monarch of fruits, the mango, has made its grand entrance into the bustling markets of Visakhapatnam, offering a delectable treat to its admirers.

With a variety of options to choose from, this favorite fruit of people worldwide is priced between Rs. 50 to Rs. 400 per kilogram, depending on the variant.

Renowned for its rich nutrient profile, mangoes are eagerly sought after by many, leading vendors to prosper during the peak seasons of May and June. This year, prices are slightly lower compared to the previous year, thanks to a bountiful yield.

Extensively cultivated in districts like East and West Godavari, Nandyal, Krishna, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam, vendors source their produce from these regions.

Some vendors from places like Rajanagaram in East Godavari pedal into the city on bicycles to sell their goods during the season.

Among the diverse varieties, the Banganapalle mango reigns supreme, commanding Rs. 70 per kilogram at Rytubazars and Rs. 100 per kilogram at roadside stalls and online grocery platforms.

Other varieties like Rasalu offer a spectrum of flavors, ranging from Rs. 40 to Rs. 300 per kilogram. From pedda rasalu to chinna rasalu, suvarnarekha, parya, and even a small, sweet variety from the Vizag Agency, there's something to suit every palate.

The highly coveted Alphonso variety from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, tops the price charts, fetching over Rs. 100 each for fruits weighing between 200 to 250 grams. Known for its unparalleled taste, Alphonso mangoes enhance culinary creations such as soufflés, purées, and mousses.

Despite the sweet pleasure of indulging in ripe mangoes during the scorching summer, the prevalence of artificially ripened fruits remains a significant concern in Visakhapatnam. Despite crackdowns, some vendors continue to employ chemicals to hasten ripening, posing health risks to consumers.

However, a simple tip can help discern artificially ripened fruits: placing a mango in a bucket of water. If it floats, it's likely artificially ripened; if it sinks, it's likely a natural ripening process.

This summer, make the right choice and savor the exquisite taste of mangoes while ensuring your health and well-being.
