New Government to Reopen Anna Canteens

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu Revives Popular Initiative to Support the Poor

The Anna Canteens, a lifeline for the poor during the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) regime, are set to reopen across the state.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who took office on June 13, 2024, in Vijayawada, has signed the order to revive these canteens, including those in Visakhapatnam.

Originally launched to provide affordable meals to daily wage earners, farm laborers, and small vendors, Anna Canteens offered breakfast, lunch, and dinner for just Rs 5 each.

The closure of these canteens by the previous YSRCP government had faced significant public criticism, as many people relied on them for their daily sustenance.

In Visakhapatnam alone, 26 Anna Canteens were established within the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits in 2018.

These canteens, located at key spots such as MVP Rythu Bazaar, Government Regional Eye Hospital, Sriharipuram, and R&B junction, Marripalem, were highly popular. The closure led to the loss of employment for around 10 women workers who each earned a salary of Rs 6,000.

The TDP had pledged during its campaign to reopen Anna Canteens, and now, with the new government in place, this promise is being fulfilled.

Notably, actor and re-elected Hindupur Assembly constituency representative Balakrishna has already ceremonially reopened a canteen in his segment, drawing considerable public attention and support.

This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to the poor and revive a significant welfare initiative, reinforcing the government's commitment to social support and community well-being.
