Nine Indian Ports Rank in Top 100 of World Bank Performance Index

Marking a significant leap in the efficiency of ship and cargo handling, nine Indian ports have secured positions in the top 100 of the World Bank's Container Port Performance Index 2023 (CPPI 2023), which ranks 405 ports globally.

For the first time, a government-owned Indian port, Visakhapatnam, has broken into the top 20, securing the 19th position. Adani-owned Mundra port also made an impressive showing, ranking 27th.

In the previous year's index, Visakhapatnam was ranked 115th and Mundra 48th. This advancement underscores a notable milestone for India's maritime industry, reflecting significant enhancements in operational efficiency and service delivery.

Visakhapatnam port's improved ranking is attributed to its performance on several key parameters: achieving 27.5 moves per crane hour, maintaining a turnaround time (TRT) of 21.4 hours, and minimizing berth idle time. These metrics highlight the port's capability to handle container ships efficiently, making it more attractive to customers.

Besides Visakhapatnam and Mundra, seven other Indian ports featured in the top 100 rankings: Pipavav (41), Kamarajar (47), Cochin (63), Hazira (68), Krishnapatnam (71), Chennai (80), and Jawaharlal Nehru (96).

The CPPI 2023, developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, provides a comparative assessment of port performance based on vessel time in ports. The top two ports in this year’s rankings are Yangshan port in China and Salalah port in Oman.

The report also noted that the average duration of a port call in 2023 was 40.5 hours, a slight increase from the global average of 36.8 hours in 2022. Of this time, 11.7% (or 3.7 hours) was idle time at the berth immediately before and after cargo operations.

Known as the 'Start-Up' and 'Finish' sub-processes of a port call, these activities ideally should not take more than 30 minutes each to complete safely.
