Organic Farming Families in Srikakulam Set New Standards for Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) initiative is driving a transformative agro-ecological movement in Srikakulam district, with 30 farming families from Palavalasa village in Burja mandal leading by example.

These families have shifted from conventional farming methods, which heavily depended on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, to adopting organic and natural farming practices. Pooling together their small landholdings ranging from five to 10 cents they’ve formed a collective five-acre plot dedicated to organic cultivation.

For nearly 11 months a year, excluding May, they grow a variety of organic greens, vegetables, and other crops, showcasing their dedication to sustainable agriculture.

By using organic fertilizers like cattle dung, Jeevamrit, Ghanamrit, neem flour, and neem infusion, these farmers have produced high-quality organic products that are in high demand at the Palakonda market. The shift has not only brought environmental benefits but also economic success. Selling their produce directly to consumers, bypassing intermediaries, has resulted in significant profits for the group.

APCNF Srikakulam district project manager, Patruni Revati, praised the farmers for their innovative approach, noting that their success is inspiring nearby villages in Burja, Amadalavalasa, and Sarubujjili mandals to adopt similar organic practices. Guruvu Janardhan Rao, a member of Rythu Sadhikara Samstha, highlighted that farmers in Nimmathorloda and Chickpet villages have also embraced organic techniques, especially in sugarcane cultivation. The jaggery produced from this organically grown sugarcane is supplied to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam for Srivari prasadam.

The success of these organic farming families is setting a powerful example, motivating others across the agricultural community to pursue both environmental sustainability and financial prosperity.
