Bhogapuram Airport to Open Six Months Ahead of Schedule
Srikakulam: Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced that the highly anticipated Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport will be operational six months earlier than its original construction timeline, offering convenience to the public.
Initially slated for completion by December 2026, the airport will now be commissioned by June 26, 2025.
Rammohan Naidu emphasized that the Bhogapuram airport will not only be one of the finest in India but also rank among the best globally. He expressed satisfaction with the state cabinet’s decision to name the airport after revolutionary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, further honoring his legacy.
The airport’s construction has seen rapid progress since the foundation stone was laid in 2015, with an estimated project cost of ₹4,700 crore. The project was initiated under the leadership of then Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Despite initial delays that pushed the completion date from 2023, the government has acquired 2,700 acres and secured all necessary permissions by 2016.
The proposal to name the Bhogapuram airport as "Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport" will soon be sent to the central government for approval. The decision has been warmly received by the people of North Andhra and the East and West Godavari districts, areas where Alluri Sitarama Raju led resistance against British colonial rule.
