Villagers Forced to Carry Body on Makeshift Stretcher for 7km in Vizianagaram District

Vizianagaram: In a heartbreaking incident, residents of Diguvakondaparti village in Gantyada mandal, Vizianagaram district, were left with no option but to carry the body of a fellow villager, Raja Rao, on a makeshift stretcher, or Doli, due to the absence of a motorable road or boat access.

The 35-year-old’s body was tied to a bamboo stick and transported on foot by family members and villagers for nearly seven kilometers.

Raja Rao, who had been battling jaundice, initially recovered after hospital treatment but tragically suffered a relapse. Despite efforts to transport him from the village to the Area Hospital in S Kota and then to the district hospital in Vizianagaram, he passed away in the early hours of Tuesday.

While the body was transported by vehicle up to the Chilakalagedda bridge, the lack of proper road access forced villagers to carry him by foot for the remainder of the journey. Raja Rao is survived by his wife, and his final rites were performed by his family on Tuesday evening.

C Sitamma, the sarpanch of Diguvakondaparti, expressed deep concern over the lack of infrastructure and urged government officials to expedite the construction of a motorable road to connect the village. She highlighted the urgent need for better accessibility to prevent such tragedies in the future.
