Visakhapatnam: Plans for an elephant holding centre in Parvathipuram Manyam district, aimed at mitigating rising human-elephant conflicts, face delays due to difficulties in securing suitable land.
With a decade-long history of elephants from Odisha straying into Andhra Pradesh forests, conflicts have intensified as elephants enter human settlements in search of food and water, damaging crops and occasionally posing safety risks to villagers.
After studying the renowned Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura, officials from the forest departments of Vizianagaram, Manyam, and Srikakulam explored establishing a similar rescue centre in the region but have yet to identify an appropriate 1,000-acre site.
Parvathipuram Manyam District Forest Officer GAP Prasuna reported that two herds, totaling 11 elephants, are active in the district and urged villagers to maintain a 300-meter distance from these areas. The forest department, with support from local leaders and police, has been raising awareness to ensure public safety, emphasizing the importance of following guidelines to prevent accidents.
Efforts to manage these conflicts will be bolstered by trained Kumki elephants from Karnataka, who will assist in safely guiding wild elephants away from human areas.
