Ratha Saptami Celebrations in Visakhapatnam: A Tribute to the Sun God

Ratha Saptami, celebrated on the seventh day of the Hindu month of Magha, is a significant festival in Visakhapatnam, marking the onset of spring and the beginning of the harvest season. Dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God, the day begins with devotees performing 'Surya Namaskar' (sun salutations) at dawn, often at prominent locations like VUDA Park and Beach Road. These gatherings are accompanied by traditional music and dance performances, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the city's rich cultural heritage.

A focal point of the celebrations is the Sri Suryanarayana Swamy Temple in Arasavalli, located near Srikakulam, approximately 100 kilometers from Visakhapatnam. Believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Kalinga rulers, this ancient temple is one of the few in India dedicated to the Sun God. On Ratha Saptami, the temple hosts special rituals and a grand chariot procession, attracting thousands of devotees from the region. The temple's unique architecture and the festive activities make it a must-visit destination during this auspicious occasion.
