Revamping Vizag's Drainage: Greater Visakhapatnam Citizens Forum Advocates for Redesign

In a proactive move towards addressing critical issues in Visakhapatnam's drainage system, the Greater Visakhapatnam Citizens Forum (GVCF) organized a discussion on Sunday.

The focus of the event centered on the challenges, problems, and potential solutions associated with the city's natural water streams, known as "geddas."

Renowned architect Shabnam Patel delivered a comprehensive presentation on sustainable design strategies tailored for the natural drainage system in Visakhapatnam. She shed light on the pressing need for a sustainable redesign and management strategy for the city's stormwater drains, known as "geddas."

The discussion gained valuable insights from key figures, including GVMC chief medical officer Dr Naresh Kumar and former Acharya Nagarjuna University vice-chancellor Prof V Balmohan Das. GVCF president Lt. Col AK Subbarao, along with other forum members, actively participated in the event.

The discussion underscored the urgency of addressing Vizag's gedda system. The city's unique topography directs most natural stormwater drains towards the sea.

While historically contributing to the city's aesthetic appeal and preventing flooding, these drains have transformed into regular waste channels due to urbanization and population growth. Solid waste, particularly plastic, is disposed into these geddas, causing pollution in coastal waters and posing a threat to marine life.

The GVCF highlighted the need for immediate attention and a comprehensive understanding of the stormwater system's impact on the city and its ecosystem. The call for a sustainable redesign reflects the forum's commitment to fostering a healthier and more environmentally conscious future for Visakhapatnam.
