Reviving Handlooms with a Modern Touch

Visakhapatnam: The timeless Narayanpet handloom saris, known for their traditional temple borders, have embraced contemporary design with contrast borders, appealing to modern sensibilities.

These exquisite weaves, once rooted in earthy tones, now feature stylish updates that resonate with a new generation.

At the Indian Silk Gallery exhibition, artisans share how blending modern designs with classic weaves has positively impacted younger buyers. "Even as fast fashion grows, traditional handlooms continue to captivate women, offering quality and authenticity," says Y. Srinivasa Rao, retired deputy director of Silk Mark Organisation, curating the event.

Weavers highlight how innovations like introducing new colors, borders, and motifs are essential to keeping the craft alive while meeting the evolving preferences of today’s shoppers. Despite these updates, the essence of heritage remains intact, allowing traditional saris to remain both relevant and cherished in modern wardrobes.

The exhibition, running until September 29 at Symphony Hall, RK Beach, offers a unique opportunity to explore these revitalized weaves that combine timeless craftsmanship with contemporary elegance.
