Salaries and Perks of India's President, Prime Minister, and Vice-President



Ahead of Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony at 7:15 pm today at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it is an opportune moment to delve into the salaries and perks of India's top officials: the President, Prime Minister, and Vice-President.

President
In 2018, the salary of the President of India was revised from ₹1.50 lakh per month to ₹5 lakh per month. This increase was announced by the former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during his budget speech. The previous revision had taken place in January 2006.

Perks:

  1. The President can travel anywhere in the country free of cost by air, rail, or steamer, along with one accompanying person whose expenses are also covered.
  2. The President receives free medical services and attendance.
  3. A furnished rent-free home, two free landlines (one for internet connectivity), a mobile phone, and five personal staff members are provided, with home maintenance costs covered.
  4. In the event of the President's death while in office, the spouse receives a family pension at 50% of the President's pension for the remainder of their life, along with free medical services for life.

Vice President
The Vice President's salary was also increased in the same budget speech from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹4 lakh per month.

Perks:

  1. Free accommodation, personal security, medical care, train and air travel, a landline connection, mobile phone service, and staff.
  2. Upon retirement, the Vice President is entitled to secretarial staff, including a Private Secretary, an Additional Private Secretary, a Personal Assistant, and two Peons. Actual charges incurred for maintaining this secretarial staff are also covered.

Prime Minister
The Prime Minister of India receives a monthly salary of ₹1.66 lakh.

Perks:

  1. A personal Special Protection Group (SPG) responsible for the Prime Minister's security.
    An exclusive aircraft, Air India One, for official visits.
  2. The official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg (formerly Race Course Road).
  3. These salaries and benefits reflect the significant responsibilities and duties associated with these high offices, ensuring that the individuals serving in these roles are supported in their official capacities.
