Simhachalam Temple Plans Sandalwood Plantation for Ritual Self-Sufficiency

The Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at Simhachalam has proposed a sandalwood plantation project to achieve self-sufficiency in meeting its ritual requirements. The temple uses large quantities of sandalwood paste throughout the year to cover the deity, a unique tradition that culminates during the annual Chandanotsavam festival when devotees are allowed to view the deity in its original form.

According to temple authorities, the plantation is intended to provide a long-term and sustainable source of sandalwood for religious purposes. At present, sandalwood required for temple rituals is procured from external sources. By cultivating sandalwood trees, the temple aims to reduce dependence on outside suppliers while preserving an important centuries-old tradition.

The project is also expected to promote environmental conservation through the cultivation of high-value native trees. Temple officials believe the initiative will support biodiversity, encourage sustainable resource management, and ensure an uninterrupted supply of sandalwood for future generations.

Simhachalam Temple is one of Andhra Pradesh's most prominent pilgrimage centres, attracting lakhs of devotees every year. The proposed plantation reflects the temple's commitment to preserving its religious heritage while adopting environmentally sustainable practices for the future.
