The zoo held special programs to commemorate World Lion Day

Every year on August 10th, World Lion Day is observed with the goal of raising awareness about lions and emphasizing the urgent need to work towards their conservation.

The global lion population has declined by nearly 95% in the last five decades. World Lion Day is observed to raise awareness of the world's dwindling lion populations. Lions have been listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
India is one of the few countries in the world with an increasing lion population, particularly in Gujarat's Gir forest. The number of lions in India has increased from 523 to 674 thanks to the efforts of the governments, forest departments, wildlife activists, and others.

On this occasion, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam has organized special World Lion Day programs. According to zoo officials, dedicated animal keepers of lions have explained many facts about lions' behavior, habits, and daily care to everyone present. A short story writing competition with the theme "majestic pair of lions in Indira Gandhi Zoological Park" was also held. This competition has drawn students of all ages, from class one to post-graduation. There are programs in place to raise awareness about wildlife.
