The felling of mature roadside trees along the National Highway between Isukathota and Maddilapalem has triggered concern among Visakhapatnam residents.
Citizens and environmentalists have questioned the removal of established trees in an area already facing dust and air-pollution concerns.
They said mature roadside trees act as natural barriers against dust and vehicular emissions.
The trees also provide shade and relief to pedestrians and residents living along busy stretches.
The concerns come amid recent instances of the city’s Air Quality Index crossing the 200 mark in some areas.
Residents fear that the loss of established greenery could increase exposure to dust and pollution.
Citizens have also questioned the contrast between tree-felling and ongoing civic greening initiatives.
They have urged authorities to plant suitable native species wherever trees have been removed.
Residents are also seeking transparency regarding the number of trees felled and the reasons for their removal.
They have sought details on the survival of trees that were reportedly translocated.
GVMC officials said trees suitable for translocation were shifted to locations at Kapuluppada and Mudasarlova.
Officials maintained that only trees considered unhealthy or unsuitable for translocation were felled.
