Understanding the Black Sand at Visakhapatnam Beach
Visakhapatnam's beaches are known for their unique black sand, a phenomenon explained by Professor A. Yugandhar Rao from the AU Geology Department.
He notes that the diverse rocky hills of the Eastern Ghats contribute to this distinctive feature.
During the rainy season, these hills erode, with sediments being transported to the sea via rivers. When disturbances occur in the sea, these sediments are washed ashore, resulting in the formation of black sand on the beaches.
This black sand primarily consists of the titanium mineral ilmenite, along with minor amounts of rutile, giving it its characteristic color and composition.
