Visakhapatnam Police to Enhance Surveillance with More CCTV Cameras

Visakhapatnam: In a concerted effort to reduce crime rates, the city police are ramping up their surveillance measures by significantly increasing the number of CCTV cameras throughout the city.

This initiative aims to enhance crime detection and prevention by expanding camera coverage in high-traffic areas and private outlets.

City Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi has emphasized the importance of installing CCTV cameras in all commercial establishments across Visakhapatnam. As the financial hub of Andhra Pradesh, the city is prioritizing crime control to ensure public safety.

To support this effort, Commissioner Bagchi held a meeting with local business owners, managers, and operators, explaining the crucial role of CCTV cameras in crime detection. He highlighted that these cameras not only deter criminal activity but also help in apprehending offenders by providing valuable evidence.

Under the Andhra Pradesh Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013, CCTV installation is mandatory in places that attract large crowds, including commercial establishments, industries, religious sites, educational institutions, and hospitals.

The Act requires that CCTV systems be installed with the capability to store video footage for at least 30 days.

During the meeting, the Commissioner instructed that all entry and exit points, as well as parking areas, must be under surveillance. The cameras must meet government specifications and ensure the safety of visitors.

Circle inspectors have the authority to inspect premises without prior notice. Any non-compliance will be reported to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and management will receive a formal notice.

Currently, Visakhapatnam has approximately 2,300 cameras linked to the command control room and over 30,000 cameras installed in private properties. By equipping every commercial unit with CCTV, the city aims to create an environment where offenders are less likely to evade justice.
