Vizag Metro Rail Project Gathers Momentum: Meeting with Developers and Officials

The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRC) is taking significant strides towards the realization of the Vizag Metro Rail (VMR) project. Scheduled for January 31 and February 1, APMRC will host a two-day developers and investors meeting in Mumbai to advance the implementation of the VMR project in Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode.

In addition, corporation officials will convene with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in New Delhi on January 29 to propel the project forward.

Managing Director of APMRC, U.J.M. Rao, revealed these developments to The Hindu on Saturday. Rao emphasized the importance of the upcoming meetings, stating their intention to secure financial clearances and approvals for the VMR project.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has committed to completing the 76.9 km metro rail project at an estimated cost of ₹14,309 crore.

The State government's approved financial model allocates 20% of the project's cost to be borne by the Centre, 20% by the State, and the remaining 60% by the private developer.

However, recent efforts have been made by the State government to seek full support from the Centre, citing the project as one of the promises made in the AP Reorganization Act 2014.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and associated documents have been submitted to MoHUA for consideration.

The technical and operational aspects of VMR are envisioned to mirror the National Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the capital area of Delhi.

The VMR project comprises four corridors totaling 76.9 kilometers and featuring 54 intermittent stations.

These corridors include Steel Plant-Kommadi, Gurudwara-Old Post Office, Tatichetlapalem-Chinna Waltair, and Kommadi-Bhogapuram International Airport, all of which underscore the strategic expansion and connectivity aims of the Vizag Metro Rail endeavour.
