GVMC's Collaborative Effort with IFC to Develop Green Action Plan for Vizag
Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is gearing up to tackle climate challenges through a strategic collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group.
In an upcoming initiative, the GVMC aims to develop a unique green action plan for Vizag, with financial support from the IFC.
Discussions are underway, and an official memorandum of understanding (MoU) is anticipated to be signed in the next few weeks.
Commissioner C M Saikanth Varma expressed the objective of the partnership, stating that the goal is to transform Vizag into a green city.
The IFC team, currently on a visit to the city, is expected to finalize an action plan before the next World Environment Day on June 5, 2024.
During their visit, the IFC team met with various stakeholders, including professors, NGOs, government officials, and local authorities.
The discussions covered potential projects such as urban greening, solar energy initiatives, wastewater recycling, and the promotion of e-vehicles.
Following the MoU, the GVMC plans to develop a comprehensive green action plan for Vizag. This plan will serve as the foundation for future environmentally friendly interventions and investments in the city.
The GVMC official highlighted that the initiative aims to incorporate international best practices and successful initiatives from other cities.
The focus is on addressing climate challenges and implementing low-carbon solutions in sectors like transportation, water, waste management, and sustainable cooling.
The GVMC had previously launched the Eco Vizag campaign on June 5, 2023, aligning with World Environment Day.
The campaign emphasized five key themes, including cleanliness, greenery, water conservation, plastic ban, and pollution reduction.
The collaborative effort with the IFC is expected to propel the Eco Vizag initiative forward, facilitating more effective climate management. Through project design, the GVMC and IFC aim to deploy lower-carbon options and mitigate climate risks to an acceptable level.
