Vizag Police Launch Innovative Traffic Management System to Reduce Accidents

Vizag: In a pioneering move, the Visakhapatnam city police have introduced a 'traffic stretch management system' aimed at reducing road accidents. Launched on Friday at Gajuwaka, this initiative is supported by the AP Chamber of Commerce and CII Young India.

The new system focuses on the 3.8 km stretch between Sheela Nagar Junction and Old Gajuwaka Junction. To ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize accidents, 15 specially trained volunteers will monitor the stretch around the clock.

These volunteers, whose salaries are funded by the AP Chambers, will enforce traffic regulations, check for overspeeding, and maintain lane discipline.

During the inauguration, Commissioner of Police A. Ravi Shankar highlighted the alarming statistic that around 350 people die annually in road accidents within Visakhapatnam city. "The primary goal of this initiative is to significantly reduce these numbers," he said.

Additional DCP (Traffic) G. Srinivasa Rao provided details on the program's operations. Volunteers will be both mobile and static, patrolling on bikes and stationed at key points. They will also conduct checks for drunken driving, monitor blood pressure, and, where possible, assess vision. Static volunteers will ensure no encroachments occur and that trucks are parked only in authorized areas to prevent accidents.

The police have identified approximately 10 high-risk stretches between Tagarapuvalasa and Lankelapalem. The current focus is on the Sheela Nagar to Old Gajuwaka stretch, with plans to extend the program to other areas based on its success.

Key attendees at the launch included Joint Commissioner K. Fakeerappa, AP Chambers representatives Ch. Srinadh, Shobhan Prakash, Pydah Krishna Prasad, and CII Young India's O. Satish. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards enhancing road safety in Visakhapatnam.
